The Color Purple Part 1

We were asked in class to discuss stereotypes "The Color Purple" has.  I didn't really say anything, it was the last 5 minutes of class and people seemed to have alot to say about the issue.  However, after thinking about it further, I kinda agree with the person who said there wasn't a particular race stereotypical issue Alice Walker was trying to make.  I guess what I'm trying to say, is that maybe she's pushing more for the reader to see how bad it was for women in the 20s and not just women, but African American women. Some of the issues she wrote about are still happening to women today.  Gender gaps are still prevalent in the workplace, home life, media image, and so forth.

I guess the only stereotype that I can see that could be made in the first section we read would be that black men are cheaters, incestuous, and they beat women.  However, it was hard for me to grasp that concept since for one, I know plenty of women of all color who have been cheated on by PLENTY of men of all races. For two, incest and domestic violence isn't just a race issue or social status issue, it's an issue across all race, wealth, and status gaps. So, back to my original assumption, if any stereotype was trying to be touched upon here, I think we should look at it at an entire man population instead of just a race issue.  Because we know ALL men are jerks!

Just kidding. . MOST men are jerks!  And that is my stereotypical conclusion.
